Saint Bega was an Irish princess who valued her virginity above all else. When she was promised in marriage to a Viking prince, she fled across the Irish Sea to land at St. Bees on the Cumbrian coast. There she settled for a time, leading a life of exemplary piety. But when she learned that pirates were raiding the coast, she moved to Northumbria for safety.
